Dead Hedge (Benjes Hedge) — Brush Barrier

A fence built entirely from yard waste: stakes and woven brush, no purchased material beyond the stakes. It doubles as wildlife habitat and a slow-release compost windrow.

Status

A traditional hedging technique from a saved pin; not built or tested by MM. Needs your own check on stake spacing and brush height for the stock or wildlife you are trying to keep in or out.

Set vertical stakes or posts in two parallel rows to form a channel, spaced to match available brush length. Lay heavy wood (logs, thick branches) first at the base for stability, then weave and pack lighter brush, branches, and yard waste tightly between and above the base logs, continuing to build up and weave material between the stakes to lock it in place.

Build Steps

  1. Set vertical stakes/posts in two parallel rows to form a channel, spaced to match available brush length.
  2. Lay heavy wood (logs, thick branches) first at the base for stability.
  3. Weave and pack lighter brush, branches, and yard waste tightly between and above the base logs.
  4. Continue building up, weaving material between the stakes to lock it in place.

Materials: yard waste, fallen branches, brush, trimmed limbs. No purchased material required beyond the stakes.

Benefits

  • Uses yard waste that would otherwise be burned, hauled off, or chipped.
  • No power tools or fasteners needed beyond stake-setting.
  • Creates wildlife habitat while functioning as a barrier.
  • Decomposes over time, so it works as a slow-release compost windrow doing double duty as a fence.
  • Very low skill floor, a good beginner build.

Where to be cautious

  • Added: a brush pile shelters snakes, rodents and ticks. Keep it away from the house and wear gloves and long sleeves when you work it.
  • Added: dry brush burns. Do not build it close to a house, a fuel tank or a burn barrel, and keep it out of any fire clearance zone.
  • Added: it is a boundary of loose brush, not a stock-proof fence. It will not hold a determined animal or a property line on its own.
