Subterranean Cooler (In-Ground Cold Storage)

A four-foot-deep, lidded, insulated pit that holds a steady cool temperature with no power — a root-cellar-style cooler.

Status

Concept from a saved pin. The 50-55 F claim is plausible here: the ground at about four feet sits near the local mean annual temperature, roughly 53-55 F in the Kanawha Valley (added). The pin gives no flooding, ventilation or food-safety notes; the cautions below are added. This is a cool-storage vault, not a refrigerator, and it does not replace one.
