CHIEF COMPLAINT

HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS

Among the oldest and most complex religious traditions in human history, active from about 3100 BCE to 400 CE, when the last hieroglyphic inscription was carved. It has no single canonical text, no founding prophet and no systematic theology. It evolved over three millennia, absorbing new gods and new interpretations while keeping certain core concepts remarkably stable. What survives: the Pyramid Texts (the oldest religious corpus in the world), the Coffin Texts, the Book of the Dead from the New Kingdom on, and extensive temple texts, hymns and ritual papyri. The myths themselves survive mostly through scattered temple inscriptions and the Greek writer Plutarch.

REVIEW OF SYSTEMS

MA'AT

Truth, justice, cosmic order and right relationship. Where other traditions organize around a creator, a covenant or a liberation, Egypt organizes around Ma'at. Its opposite is Isfet: chaos, injustice, falsehood.

MANY CREATION MYTHS

Heliopolis, Memphis, Hermopolis and Thebes were held at the same time without demanding resolution. Theological contradiction was acceptable.

THE SUN'S JOURNEY

Ra crosses the sky, dies at sunset, travels through the Duat during the twelve hours of night, and is reborn at dawn.

OSIRIS

The first king, murdered by his brother Set, reassembled by Isis and made lord of the dead. His son Horus claims the throne.

THE AFTERLIFE

The Duat, its gatekeepers and spells, and the weighing of the heart against the feather of Ma'at in the Hall of Two Truths.

PHYSICAL EXAM — STYLE & STRUCTURE

  • —Syncretism was standard: Ra-Atum, Amun-Ra and Osiris-Ra merge without either identity canceling the other.
  • —The negative confession in the Book of the Dead is an ethical portrait of a life that upholds Ma'at.
  • —The pharaoh's primary religious job is to present Ma'at to the gods through correct ritual and just rule.
  • —Isis became the most universally worshipped deity of the later period, her cult spreading across the Roman Empire as far as Britain.
  • —Thoth, the Egyptian god of wisdom and writing, was identified with the Greek Hermes after Alexander's conquest in 332 BCE, producing Hermes Trismegistus.

ASSESSMENT & PLAN

Start with Ma'at, the Osiris myth and the weighing of the heart. Then the daily journey of Ra. Read the Contendings of Horus and Set for the story. It is a non-denominational reference guide. The full guide recommends R. O. Faulkner's translation of the Book of the Dead as the scholarly standard (Budge is the classic but dated), John Romer's Ancient Lives for daily life and Normandi Ellis's Awakening Osiris for a literary rendering, and says to read alongside the Hermetic Corpus guide.
