PATIENT
The Old Testament after the Torah
COVERS
c. 1200–400 BCE (approx.)
FORM
History, wisdom and poetry, prophecy
SETTING
Canaan, the divided kingdoms, Babylon and Persia
CHIEF COMPLAINT
How does a people keep faith through conquest, kings, exile, and suffering that makes no sense?
HISTORY OF PRESENT ILLNESS
This guide covers everything after the Torah: the Historical Books, the Wisdom literature and the Prophets, spanning roughly 1,000 years of Israelite history, from the conquest of Canaan around 1200 BCE to the Persian period around 400 BCE. The story runs from conquest and the cycles of failure in Judges, through the monarchy of Saul and David, to the divided kingdom and its fall: Israel to Assyria in 722 BCE and Judah to Babylon in 586 BCE. Alongside it sit the books that ask what it all means: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the prophets who judge the kings.
REVIEW OF SYSTEMS
HESED
Covenant loyalty, steadfast love. The most important theological word in the Historical Books, used of God's faithfulness and of human loyalty.
KINGS AND COVENANT
The Davidic covenant is the center of the messianic hope, yet every king is judged by the standard of Deuteronomy, and almost all fail.
WISDOM
Hokhma. Practical, observed wisdom in Proverbs, and the limits of wisdom in Job and Ecclesiastes.
SUFFERING AND DOUBT
Job's innocent suffering, the lament psalms, and Qohelet's hebel. The canon includes its own hardest questions.
THE PROPHETS
A nabi is primarily a covenant enforcer and social critic, not primarily a predictor of the future.
PHYSICAL EXAM — STYLE & STRUCTURE
- —A library, not a book. The Jewish canon has three sections (Torah, Prophets, Writings); the Christian Old Testament reorganizes the same books into law, history, poetry and prophecy.
- —The narratives refuse to idealize anyone. 2 Samuel does not hide what David did.
- —Psalms is a prayer book of 150 poems in five books, and the most used text in the Bible.
- —Proverbs is the most Confucian text in the Hebrew Bible: ethics grounded in how the world actually works.
- —Esther never mentions God. Ecclesiastes ends in a qualified recommendation, not a promise.
ASSESSMENT & PLAN
Read it with the Torah guide for the full picture. If you are short on time, good places to start are Ruth (short and complete), Job, a handful of Psalms, Ecclesiastes and Micah 6:8. It is a non-denominational reference guide. The full guide recommends Robert Alter (W. W. Norton) for literary quality and the NRSV for scholarly accuracy.
